Open Adoption

What is open adoption?

If you are considering adoption, there are a variety of arrangements available to you, including open adoption, closed adoption, and anonymous surrender. In a closed adoption, the adoptive parents would receive no identifying information about you. In addition to this, all fifty states and Puerto Rico have some variation of Safe Haven Laws that protect birth parents who wish to anonymously surrender a newborn infant to any hospital, fire station, or police station. These laws promote safe delivery and your baby would immediately be placed into the custody of a pre-approved family. However, if neither of these solutions meets your needs, you can choose open adoption.

Open adoption, also known as modern adoption, prioritizes the emotional well-being of all parties involved and can create a connection to provide a nurturing environment for birth parents, adoptive parents, and the child. The arrangement fosters more open communication and empowers birth parents with choices.

Fostering Transparency and Connection

The primary distinguishing feature of open adoption is the arrangement’s commitment to open communication among the birth parents, adoptive parents, and the child. This approach allows for a more meaningful and enduring relationship for all parties and enables the child to understand their background and identity more deeply. By maintaining a connection with both sets of parents, the child can experience the love and support of their extended family, fostering a sense of belonging and security.

Empowering Birth Parents with Choices

Another core principle of open adoption is empowering birth parents with greater control and involvement in the adoption process. Birth parents can select the adoptive parents of their choice and access comprehensive support and resources. Legal guidance may be sought out during this process as several legal factors, such as the necessary legal procedures, documentation, and rights of the birth parents, adoptive parents, and the child, are considered.

When considering open adoption, birth parents work closely with an adoption agency to create a personalized adoption plan that aligns with their preferences and values. Through the agency’s guidance, birth parents can select the adoptive parents who best match their vision for the child’s future. The adoption agreement is a collaborative process that ensures the well-being and best interests of the child are at the forefront of all decisions.
